Project details:
Location: Mumbai, India
Completed: April 2022
Area: 2750 sq. ft.
Located in the heart of Mumbai, this sea-facing apartment needed a transformation. The Shahs, a family of three, asked ABM to enhance the space.
The client was looking to retain most of the existing walls but adapt the plan to their new requirements.
The home consists of two bedrooms plus one flexible guest / family room, with a beautiful outdoor verandah. The living and dining are connected as one space; a custom Azran Khambatta wooden sculpture forms a screen between the two areas.

The client chose the color palette to match the artwork; the statement Paresh Maity's work hanging in the living room synchronizes with the cushions and the emerald green armchair. The skylight above the dining area allows natural light to light the space.
A simple wooden sliding door conceals the kitchen and servants’ area. The client chose to use an Arttdi’nox© stainless steel kitchen because it is extremely durable and very hygienic.
The living and dining spaces are in turn connected to the family room, which has a sliding door that allows the room to double up as a guest bedroom. The family room is equipped with a sofa sum bed which fits perfectly into a niche.
A picture window behind this sofa frames the greenery perfectly. An orange-red wall forms the backdrop to this space. The existing floor could not be changed, hence a wooden floor added on top of the existing users in the entire home adds warmth.
The best part about the common spaces is the outdoor, partially open verandah that forms the focal point of the home. This verdant zone is covered with a translucent fabric, which allows light to filter through, casting shadows of the surrounding foliage. Outdoor furniture plus two bright yellow chairs form an intimate seating area under the skylight; this juxtaposes a quirky, statement bar unit nearby.
The bedrooms are separated from the common areas by a corridor that creates an isolated private zone. The daughter’s room is the first one down the corridor, which was designed to be simple and clutter free. The decoration is added only in the subtle wall molding and decorative wall lights. The blue bed story is the one pop of color in the room.
The master bedroom down the corridor faces the sea. At sunset, sunlight filters in making the space glow. An easy chair next to the window allows one to enjoy their evening chai while appreciating the view. Around the corner, an intimate workspace allows the client may work from home.
The transformation of the home created a light, airy and spacious adobe for the family.
